How unclaimed bags move from airline tracing systems to resale stores, auctions and secondhand markets.
According to Lovemoney’s 2017 visit to Greasby’s auction house in South London, lots of luggage there can be listed by broad categories such as women’s, men’s or children’s clothing, and a 2014 consumer guide noted that the bags are sold unseen. Greasby’s is one destination for the tiny fraction of checked luggage that never goes home: Unclaimed Baggage’s 2026 Found Report says more than 99.9% of checked bags eventually return to their owners. Some bags that remain unclaimed eventually enter commercial or charitable channels.
The Scale of Mishandling
The global aviation system handles billions of bags, and some inevitably miss their connections. SITA’s Baggage IT Insights 2025 report counted 33.4 million mishandled bags in 2024, or 6.3 per 1,000 passengers. Its 2026 report counts about 24 million for 2025, or 4.9 per 1,000, with the rate down 23% and volume down 19%, as passenger traffic rose from 4.8 billion in 2024 to 5 billion in 2025. The 19% is measured against a revised baseline. The 2026 report’s comparison implies about 30 million mishandled bags in 2024, rather than the 33.4 million reported in the previous edition. The reason for the revision is not explained in the sources available, so the two editions’ totals should not be directly subtracted. Transfers caused 39% of mishandling in 2025, down from 41% a year earlier.
These figures cover all mishandling, not permanent loss. According to coverage of SITA’s 2026 report, delayed bags made up about three-quarters of incidents in 2025, damaged bags about a fifth and permanently lost bags about 4%, which works out to roughly a million bags. SITA also reports that sharing item locations from Apple’s Find My with its WorldTracer system cut permanently lost bags by 90% in its first year. That could in principle shrink the pipeline that feeds resale, though none of the sources reviewed measures any effect on resale inventory.
The Search Before the Sale
Before an unclaimed bag reaches a resale outlet, airlines try to return it. Under Article 17(3) of the Montreal Convention, which governs international carriage, a passenger whose checked baggage has not arrived 21 days after it ought to have arrived may enforce the rights arising from the contract of carriage. For destruction, loss, damage or delay of baggage, the convention caps liability at 1,519 Special Drawing Rights per passenger, a limit ICAO raised effective December 28, 2024, and which the US Department of Transportation puts at roughly $2,175. Compensation depends on proof of loss, so the figure is a ceiling, not a standard payout. For covered US domestic flights, federal rules bar airlines from capping liability for provable baggage loss, damage or delay below $4,700 per passenger. That minimum rose from $3,800 under a rule that took effect January 22, 2025, though DOT said it would not enforce the change until March 20, 2025.
None of these figures sets a timetable for disposal or guarantees payment of the maximum. Unclaimed Baggage says airlines search for 90 days, declare unclaimed bags “orphaned” and compensate passengers before the bags leave airline custody, after which the company buys them. That is the company’s own description, and it does not mean every passenger receives the full value of a bag’s contents. Airline policies for declaring a bag lost vary, and DOT says most airlines declare one lost between five and fourteen days after the flight, so the 90 days should not be read as a universal rule for every carrier. In the UK, Greasby’s owner told the Globe and Mail in 2008 that bags must stay unclaimed for at least three months before sale, and a 2022 Daily Mail account said bags often reach auction houses such as Greasby’s after three months.
A 2022 Daily Mail account said Greasby’s takes a commission and returns the rest to the airline. In 2008, Heathrow’s operator, BAA, said its share went to charity. Available reporting does not establish a single policy across auction houses, or whether a former owner can reclaim a bag after sale.
The Alabama Warehouse
Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro, Alabama, was founded in 1970 and buys unclaimed bags and cargo directly from transportation companies. In 2025 comments to Fox News, a company executive said it recycles about a third of what arrives and gives another third to charity. A March 2026 KMOV report said donations include wheelchairs and eyeglasses and described the items that are sold as discounted by up to 80%. The company says it diverted 1,330 tons of material from landfills in 2025 and donated more than one million items. These are company-reported figures and have not been independently audited.
Unclaimed Baggage has also run a mystery-suitcase auction since 2025. For its second annual event, the company announced a date of June 13, 2026, with 20 unprocessed suitcases to be sold as-is and without previews, alongside a debut online auction for individual items.
The UK Auction Route
In the UK, some unclaimed airport baggage enters auction channels. TopCashback estimates that around 300 pieces of luggage go unclaimed each month across Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick, and does not present this as an official airport count. The same guide names Greasby’s in London, Mulberry Bank in Glasgow and Wellers in Guildford, and lists BCVA and Undelivrd among online sellers, with Undelivrd selling in bulk at a flat rate. A June 2014 Money to the Masses tip said all British Airways lost luggage was sold through Greasby’s, which describes the arrangement at that time and not current airline policy. A 2022 Daily Mail account said Greasby’s regularly receives unclaimed cases from Heathrow and other airports.
Charges vary by auction house, and TopCashback says they can include auction fees, a tiered buyer’s premium and VAT. At a 2017 Lovemoney visit to Greasby’s, bidding started at £8 and a pair of suitcases cost about £28 including fees and VAT.
Buyers cannot assume the original contents are intact. The 2014 tip said electronics and cameras were removed from British Airways bags before auction, a 2016 Lovemoney guide said valuables could be bid on separately, and a 2008 Globe and Mail visit described in-house pickers taking first choice. These accounts are dated and specific to Greasby’s, and they do not establish a universal procedure.
Wiped Data, Strange Finds
Unclaimed Baggage says it tests electronics and erases personal data to NIST standards before sale.
The company’s own 2026 Found Report lists a fully assembled robot, a matching set of samurai swords and a meteorite, along with diamond earrings the company valued at $43,400, its most expensive find. These descriptions and valuations are the company’s, not independent appraisals. Coverage of the report also cited a 1957 letter addressed to Marilyn Monroe.
Beyond these channels, the trail goes cold: a bag may be traceable to a buyer, but the later journey of each item is rarely documented. To improve the chances of recovery, travelers can use tracking tags, attach contact details outside the bag, and file a report with the airline’s tracing system as soon as a bag fails to arrive. The afterlife of lost luggage is less a single global route than a set of disposal systems, each with its own rules and limits.
